7 fun things to do in Fargo-Moorhead this winter

There are many outdoor and indoor activities to enjoy throughout the Fargo-Moorhead community during winter.

From skating and skiing to enjoying some performances at the historic Fargo Theatre, here’s a list of some of the fun things to check out around the area.

Frostival
Celebrate winter with a variety of outdoor activities, including cardboard sled racing, frozen fortresses, snow golf and more during Frostival. Events begin Jan. 31 and run through Feb. 8, and are held throughout Fargo, West Fargo and Moorhead.

Bison Athletics
There are several NDSU sporting events on campus during the winter months. Men’s and women’s basketball, track and field and men’s wrestling are the teams you can cheer on.  As a student, you can attend all home regular season games for free.

Ice Skating
Check out one of 30 ice rinks across the Fargo-Moorhead area. The Boradway Square rink, located in downtown Fargo, is close to campus, in addition to a variety of stores, restaurants and coffee shops. The Lights Ice Rink, located in West Fargo, is another fun location to check out. Skate rentals are available at the NDSU Wellness Center.

Fargo Film Festival
The annual Fargo Film Festival brings filmmaker’s work to the big screen in the historic Fargo Theatre. Awards are given for animation, documentary feature, documentary short, experimental, narrative feature, narrative short and student film. The festival is scheduled for March 18-22.

In addition to films, the event includes presentations and panel discussions related to filmmaking and filmmakers. This year a special screening of The Breakfast Club followed by a conversation with actress Molly Ringwald will be held on Saturday, March 22.

Hiking
If you enjoy hiking the trails in Fargo-Moorhead during the summer, check out the trails that are open all four seasons. Buffalo River State Park and the paths along the Red River by Lindenwood Park are some great locations to explore.

Coffee and Cocoa Crawl
Explore a variety of downtown businesses during this year’s Coffee & Cocoa Crawl scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 8 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Skiing and Snowshoeing
Take advantage of the snowy conditions by going snowshoeing and cross-country skiing on one of Fargo’s 10 groomed cross country ski trails. Snowshoes and cross-country skis can be rented at Edgewood Golf Course, M.B. Johnson Park and the NDSU Wellness Center.

The Wellness Center will be hosting a guided cross-country ski trip through Lindenwood Park on Saturday, Feb. 8 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The trip will allow students to learn the basics of cross-country skiing while experiencing outdoor recreation in the Fargo-Moorhead area. Gear will be provided, though students may bring their own.
